CHRISTINE - ICU NURSE

1. How would you describe your work?
Challenging because I am new, and don’t know what I don’t know. I really enjoy being an ICU nurse – I work with nurses, patients, family, doctors, nurses aides, cleaning crew, etc. – a lot of new people every day. And in stressful situations you really get to know people and they get to know you!

2. What are some ways that your work is a reflection of God?
My attitude and work ethic speak volumes of the God I serve! Kindness, compassion, and not baring false witness – is that who I imitate? Or do I snap at people, gossip, am I lazy, cut corners, or just take easy assignments – without saying much – everything I do reflects God! As a nurse, everything you do is seen in a legally binding document and is a building block for the next nurse or doctor to treat the same patient. I don’t have to be perfect, just honest, aware and knowledgeable!

3. How does your work provide insight into the brokenness of this world?
So, so much insight – actually lately it’s been too much for me to bear – gun shots, drug overdose, mental illness, suicide, sad accidents that affect lives, liars, hope in the wrong thing to save family members, gossip, and hateful hearts – very broken, broken people that make up a broken world.

4. Jesus commands us to “love our neighbors as ourselves”. How does your work function as an opportunity to love and serve others?
Serving is a form of love. Every day we have a choice to either serve ourselves or our neighbors and God. My job is perfect for that – I can serve my co-workers, my patients family and the doctors by helping fellow nurses, being a good nurse for my doctors and patients, and being kind and having good teamwork skills! Kindness and good hard work ethics is noticeable – then I can teach them about God!
