MARK - FINE ARTIST
1. How would you describe your work?
I make my living as a fine artist (oil painter). When I’m not painting in my studio, I am travelling to shows and selling my paintings in different juried events across the country.
2. What are some ways that your work is a reflection of God?
Many of my paintings show some kind of landscape in them, trying to reflect God’s beauty and peace in nature. Many of my paintings are “lonely” but not depressing (at least not to me!)...
3. How does your work provide insight into the brokenness of this world?
When selling my paintings, it’s usually a happy event for both me and my client. However, any joy that one of my paintings brings to someone will obviously never fully satisfy them. I think this is a good reminder for myself and my wife that no matter how many things you possess in this life, even if they are meaningful nice things, they are still just items that will eventually go away and you will lose. I feel truly blessed to share the talents God has given me in such a personal way, and that will always mean more to me than any single painting sold.
4. Jesus commands us to “love our neighbors as ourselves”. How does your work function as an opportunity to love and serve others?
Usually the most difficult yet best opportunity to serve others and be an example of Christ is to my fellow artist neighbors at events. I typically do not align politically or on spiritual matters with them, so it can be a struggle for me to always have patience and love for them. This is something I’ve tried to work hard on and through doing shows and having new neighbors each time I’ve been able to make some really meaningful relationships. Small things like giving them a hand setting up their display or bringing them back a lunch or coffee can go such a long way. Most of the time it’s just having a conversation with them and getting to know them that means to most to others and serves me well. Beyond that I’ve made some great connections with my patrons. People that you hardly know who invite you into their homes and have meals with you, or just want to enjoy talking with you. Usually people who are at an income level that I will never come close to seeing but are still so welcoming and gracious.
