For this lesson, we interviewed several people in various areas of employment to a.) demonstrate the wide variety of careers available to you and, b.) to show that every job can be done for the glory of God and be a reflection of Him.
These are the questions we asked:
How would you describe your work?
What are some ways your work is a reflection of God?
How does your work provide insight into the brokenness of this world? How does your work function as an opportunity to love and serve others?
How can you learn more about a career before selecting one?
Talk to a professional
A lot of times jobs are all about who you know! Do you have a family member, friend, fellow church member, or teacher who is in a profession that interests you? Use that resource to your advantage and ask tons of questions! What does their day-to-day look like? What aspects of the job did they not anticipate when they first started? Questions like this will you guide you in the right direction and help you know if you’re truly interested.
Shadow for a day
Lots of businesses are open to having high school or college students shadow their employees, even if just for a few hours, to get an idea of what the job is really like.
Volunteer for a season
Volunteering can give you lots of practical experience. It gives you the chance to spend time in a particular work environment and see a lot of different aspects of that field.
Intern for a summer
Internships are sometimes paid, sometimes not, but they always provide lots of hands-on experience and exposure to other people in that field who may be a good resource for you when it comes to finding a job.
What other questions should I consider before choosing a college or career?
What would it take to start a business in my area of interest?
How are other life choices impacted by this career – family, travel expectations, work hours? What ongoing education/licenses/credentials would be required in my area of interest?
Read: 1 Corinthians 12:1-31
Three questions for reflection on 1 Corinthians 12:
1) Why are there “varieties” of gifts and activities?
2) What is the role of the community of faith in your personal gifting and choices?
3) What are some ways you are beginning to discern your gifts as an opportunity to reflect God?
